Qatar 2022The French team wants to join Italy and Brazil in history
If it wins the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, France will become the third nation to retain its trophy, after Italy in the 1930s and Brazil in 58 and 62.
The France team, if it wins the World Cup final against Argentina on Sunday, will become the third nation to retain its title, 84 years after Italy, double world champion in 1934 and 1938, and 60 years after Brazil. , who had won it in 1958 and 1962.
1934: Italy organizes the second edition of the World Cup, “Il Campionate Mondiale di Calcio”. After crushing the United States 7-1 in the round of 16 with a hat-trick from Angelo Schiavo, Italy’s course at home then resembles that of the fighter.
The Italians snatch three victories against the Spaniards, the Austrians and the Czechoslovakians in the quarter, half and final. They played two extra times, against Spain then Czechoslovakia in the final. At the time of facing the Czechs, they also have a match more than them in the legs: the penalty shootout does not yet exist, Italy, having been unable to beat Spain in the eighth (1- 1 ap) on May 31, had to face this selection a second time the next day.
1938: Italy, automatically qualified, begins the defense of its title in France with difficulty. At the Stade Vélodrome in Marseille, they only beat Norway in extra time. The rest will be more convincing for the team of which Vittorio Pozzo is still the coach. After eliminating Brazil’s Leonidas – the tournament’s top scorer – in the semi-finals, the Italians beat Hungary 4-2 in a final featuring two survivors of the 1934 epic, Giuseppe Meazza, promoted captain, and Giovanni Ferrari.
1958: Brazil will win the first of its five World Cups in Sweden, with a young phenomenon then 17 years old in his team: Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known as Pelé. Pelé has at his side a magician in the person of Garrincha and in Vava an exceptional scorer: with this magic trio of attackers, Brazil crushes Sweden 5-2 in the final.
In this final, one of the most significant of the World Cup – it remains the one with the greatest number of goals scored, in total and by the only winner –, Pelé scored twice, Vava also on two crosses from Garrincha.
Pelé, voted best player of the tournament, had already been the executioner of France in the semi-finals, won 5-2, by scoring a hat-trick.
A title without Pelé
1962: after two editions in Europe, the World Cup returns to South America, to Chile. The disconcerting dribbles of Garrincha and the vista of Vava during a final which sees Brazil retain their title by beating the Czechs do not completely forget the absence of Pelé, who is injured in the second match, against the same Czechs in hens. A final where, like four years earlier, the Brazilians will be behind before flying away.
The Brazilians were able to overcome in this sixth edition the early unavailability of “King Pelé”, to manage to go all the way and lift the Cup for the second time, by scoring 13 goals in six matches.
A small sign for deprived France a few days before its first match at the Qatari Ballon d’Or 2022 World Cup, center-forward Karim Benzema, also injured?
