“In Italy at the moment there is none alarmbut we have to prepare for the worst case scenario and already know what to do if it should be trouble, without hysterics“.

So Fabrizio I prefervirologist and Health Director of the IRCCS Galeazzi Orthopedic Institute and Associate Professor of General and Applied Hygiene at the University of Milan, explained to Fanpage.it what to expect in Italy after the boom of Covid cases in China and the decision of the Meloni Government to introduce theNegative swab obligation for those arriving from China.

Dr. Pregliasco, what will we be able to see in the coming weeks?

“Beyond the displeasure for what is happening and which is a bit like the beginning of a wave like the one on a monstrous scale that happened in Bergamo with us, and which could have been avoided for colleagues, operators and more fragile people who have not been protected, there are two options that interest us.

On the one hand, there could be an increase in importation cases, and this is probable because if these subjects go around after 3 years of absence we can imagine that they are distributed throughout the world; and then the ugliest hypothesis is that this enormous amount of expected replications could lead to the selection of new variants. This is the element that we must contain”.

How worried should we be in Italy?

“To date there is no contingent risk but in the light of past experiences we try to imagine the worst scenario. There must be concern, but proactively. We see what the unpleasant scenarios are, we prepare and act based on the fact that we already know what to do if there should be trouble, without hysteria”.

After the obligation of swabs for those arriving from China, do you think that strict measures will be introduced again?

“If it refers to the masks, I don’t think so. But all this makes us think that things are not over, we were in a wave in which everyone thought that the pandemic was behind us, but this shows us that we have to live with this virus, that will annoy us again.”

Western governments are running for cover because it seems that China’s numbers are not clear…

“Yes, the problem is that there is no transparency, and it’s a shame because in a situation like this the whole world should collaborate and give information because there is an interest in humanity. So in the face of this uncertainty and the opacity in this area to think badly is normal”.
