Autostrade per l’Italia: new public square inaugurated near Milan

CEO Tomasi: “Infrastructures an opportunity for urban revitalization” (Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor Plus) – Milan, 10 January – A new elevated public square to ensure pedestrian and cycle passage between Caldara park and via Friuli, in the Municipality of Cinisello Balsamo. The public space was inaugurated and handed over to citizens this morning in the presence of Matteo Salvini, Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Attilio Fontana, President of the Lombardy Region, the Deputy Mayor of the Metropolitan City of Milan Michela Palestra, the Mayor of Cinisello Balsamo Giacomo Giovanni Ghilardi and the CEO of Autostrade per l’Italia Roberto Tomasi.

The project carried out by Autostrade per l’Italia – reports a note – responds to the needs of the area, crossed by the A4 Milan-Brescia motorway: conceived with a view to sustainability and gentle mobility, in addition to the cycle/pedestrian path, the it involved the construction of a skatepark, two play areas for children, an elevator, a lighting and video surveillance system and the installation of street furniture, from benches to bicycle racks. The square was created with the desire to ‘sew up’ a part of the municipal territory crossed by the motorway section, giving citizens back the possibility of returning to benefit from the two municipal areas of the Caldara park and the public space of via Friuli, bypassing the infrastructure . The works for the realization of the project lasted about a year.

The intervention, worth 1.6 million euros, will make it possible to recover an area of about 7,000 square meters and is part of the wider project for the construction of the dynamic IV lane on the 10 km long A4 – worth 240 million euros – which also included the construction of the 435-metre sound tunnel between via Matteotti and via Friuli, the works for which were completed in October 2020. The entire project reflects a new way of conceiving the development of the motorway network, exploiting innovation and technology to enable the capacity of the infrastructures to be adapted to the increased traffic requirements, according to the principles of sustainability and the redevelopment of urban settlements.

An example of this is the sound tunnel itself which, from a green perspective, has been equipped with photovoltaic panels for a total power of about 200 kW and low-consumption LED lighting systems, like the entire new upgraded stretch.

‘The upgrading of the A4 is part of Autostrade per l’Italia’s industrial plan, an infrastructure development and investment program worth over 21 billion euros, focused on integrated mobility management, infrastructure digitalisation, sustainability and on the relationship with the community. The enhancement and redevelopment of the territory crossed by our network is one of the guiding principles of all the Group’s projects. These new spaces at the service of citizens are an example of how an infrastructure can be an opportunity to relaunch and improve the quality of life of an entire urban area, restoring the principles of harmony with the urban fabric, without renouncing the need ‘for the sustainable development of the network’ declared Roberto Tomasi, Chief Executive Officer of Autostrade per l’Italia.

Giacomo Ghilardi, Mayor of Cinisello Balsamo, was also satisfied: ‘Today we are inaugurating the last piece of a plan of strategic importance which completes the redevelopment work on the A4 motorway. A significant work of environmental mitigation and an element of mending and connecting two city areas divided by a physical barrier, as well as a meeting and socializing place for all citizens. We hope – adds the Mayor – that it can be fully experienced and used with care and in full respect of the common good. The result of a work conducted in synergy with all the subjects involved to arrive at offering residents a better quality of life, new spaces and new services’.
